What Is Sermorelin?

Sermorelin is the active 29-amino acid fragment of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) — the minimum sequence needed to bind the pituitary GHRH receptor. It was originally FDA-approved in 1997 under the brand name Geref for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric growth hormone deficiency. Geref was later discontinued commercially, and sermorelin now exists primarily in the research and compounding market.

Mechanistically, sermorelin stimulates the anterior pituitary to release the body's own growth hormone in a pulsatile, feedback-regulated pattern. This is distinct from direct exogenous GH administration, which bypasses the pituitary and delivers a supraphysiologic bolus. Because endogenous GH release remains subject to somatostatin negative feedback, sermorelin's effect on GH/IGF-1 output is self-limiting.

Current adult-use evidence relies more on practitioner experience and older studies from the 1990s and 2000s than on modern large-scale randomized trials. Sermorelin is often positioned alongside newer GHRH analogs like tesamorelin and CJC-1295 (Modified GRF 1-29), which have longer half-lives.
